Murtagh splits from Aga Khan
MURTAGH'S role as number one to one of Ireland's leading owner/ breeders was ended with immediate effect yesterday with a surprising announcement more than two months before the end of the current season.
The Co Meath rider is currently sidelined through injury and is expected to be out for at least another week with a hairline fracture to his cheekbone.
The split came as a major shock to the Irish racing industry as it is a role that Murtagh has held exclusively since parting company with Ballydoyle in 2010 and the relationship between Murtagh and the Aga Khan spans back almost two decades.
Sinndar was the most high profile horse that Murtagh rode in the famous green and red colours as the pair won the 2000 Epsom Derby as well as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the Irish Derby.
Following a big race success in France this year on Valyra, Murtagh was publically praised by his boss.
That was after the Prix de Diane at Chantilly, but "differences between the parties" was the reason for the announcement yesterday according to Pat Downes

Downes simply added: "I can confirm that it is true but I don't have a whole lot more to say other than it was agreed that we would part."
