I think that article could deserve it's own thread not least because of the comments at the bottom which are all, Times reader clichs obviously, jump all over the unions for
burberry watches refusing to work. Where ASLEEP said that they would be willing to work for double time and a Day Off In Lieu (seems reasonable) Here there was a Sunday Service yesterday and today (both holidays) and on Christmas eve I think most local services stopped with reduced long distance services. Stopping completely for 2 days of maintenance seems ok but. well, frankly speaking, short winter days and bad weather: how much maintenance can they do?
I hate to sound like I'm taking the side of the train companies here, but although this is probably for maintainence reasons, it does also enable the railworkers to be among the dwindling portion of the population who actually get a couple of days of over christmas. Perhaps it's just because we're used to 24 hour shopping, helplines etc and services all over the place every single day of the year that we can't bear to think of not being able to get around the country for two whole days, but is it really that bad?
I definitely think people should still have christmas
tom shoes day off unless they are totally essential worker like eg emergency services, because like it or not 'Christmas day' is till a big day for people in the UK, as much for social cultural reasons. On the continent, Chritmas eve is much more of a big festival than in UK. Polish friends of mine have a big meal on christmas eve evening when they give one another presents; it's traditional. I once worked for dial a ride, a taxi service for diabled people. And new management threatened to sack us if we wouldn't work christmas day. They backed down eventually as much because our clients all supported us. But we had to work Boxing day and got paid triple time. I think if people expect public transport to run on boxing day they should have to pay extra, so that
burberry outlet the workers are properly compensated, for not being able to have the day off with
shamballa jewelry their families in our culture, in which boxing day is till big. I would be happy to pay extra. I think gradually though boxing day may become less important as more and more people are expected to work and we become more continental in our attitudes. I think this is already happening to some extent, by people even expecting someone to work on boxing day. When I was a child it would have been unthinkable. My local corner shop was open today, but then culturally they are not christian, even though they have festooned the shop with christmas decorations.
Yeah hogmanay was always bigger in Scoltland. Though its big here now. I think in the sixties it wasn't even a bank holiday here in England. Every culture has its traditions. I remember once being in France and getting caught in Paris on 'All Souls day', the
bred 11s 2012 day after Halloween, all the restaurants were shut because its a public holiday there. Guy Falkes day in England is now less important as Halloween has got bigger and bigger. These things do change, but whatever the current social wotsit, workers should be compensated extra for working, if a traditonal day for people to all come together for a knees up. I know traditionally in Catholic countries, Easter is always much bigger than christmas. But personally I still prefer time off at christmas and like the tradition of boxing day for all the footie going on.
>>Yeah, it is a bit stupid not to have
Pandora Charms checked the times before Fair
Goyard Bags point But I just assumed Boxing Day would be normal, especially in places like Bradford and Manchester where at least a fifth of the people couldn't care less it's Christmas or St Stephans Day. I'm
microsoft office 2007 product key astonished that, given the trains are running on New Years Day (wild horses wouldn't get me into work on Jan 1st whereas I'd be happy to work today), there's nothing today it genuinely never occured to me they wouldn't be running.
Maybe it's an age thing then HI. Because I wouldn't assume public transport was working today. Cripes even
nike air max 1 the local Supers are all shut today round
pandora charms sale here. Because of my social background and experience I really like the fact that 2 days in a row are public holidays for the vast majority of workers. But I'm certain it will gradually
http://www.munnyrabbit.com change, apart from anything else as the racial/cultural mix of England
Pandora Necklace sale has changed so much. They said on the news the other day that there are more catholics attending church now than anglicans, for the first time in several hundred years because of so many eastern Europeans coming here. I in no way care about the religious thing. But the cultural aspect can't be ignored. Slowly we'll all probably get used to working on boxing day, in a few years every one will think as you HI. And yes you are right new years day is now much bigger than boxing day in many ways.
More likely
nike free sale to go the other way. The reason Christmas wasn't such a big thing until recently in Scotland was the influence of the Presbyterian church. Catholics, who were persecuted, were forbidden from celebrating Mass and especially so on the 25th (Christ's Mass). The Kirk regarded it as a "Popish Festival". The English Anglican church was a bit more easy going Catholicism Lite. There are now more practicing Catholics in England than Anglicans, for the first time in 400 years. As the influx of immigrants continues from Eastern Europe, Catholicism will continue to cement it's place as the number one religion in the UK. In
toms shoes sale an unholy confluence of religion and commercialism, expect to see Christmas and Easter grow in importance.
Yeah but Catholics put Easter as by far the biggest christian festival. I couldn't believe how much stuff went on during holy week when I went to Madrid. And I think the Eastern Europeans coming here are for reasons of economics. I can foresee a time when the basic 'religion' will be capitalism. All shops and public transport will run 24/7/365. All pubs will close because of the cheap booze. I can't believe how many pubs have shut round here. I think religion will be practised differently and have to fit with capitalism rather than at present capitalism fitting in with religion. Any socialising will have to be fitted in around work. There won't be any public holidays that are truly communal. That's why I'm still all basically for certain days when people have to put up with no trains. In some ways I'm glad I'm not younger. I don't like the inevitability of the way society is developping.
It's one option I suppose, but you can't wipe away a culture in a generation. Or even three, as we're finding out to our cost. Yes, Britain had been growing more and more secular. Church attendances were sliding year on year. But mass immigration brings people from some of the poorest areas of the planet where religion holds great sway. Yes, they come for economic reasons, but they don't shrug off a lifetime of religion at passport control. And multiculturalism means you cannot criticise ethnic beliefs. Incidentally, it is still a fundamental part of employment
