Community-minded students from all over Siskiyou County and beyond gathered at the Yreka Family Resource Center on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Siskiyou County Youth Leadership Summit a two-day training for teenagers and adults who work with youth to teach them how to be effective leaders in their communities. The training was sponsored by the Siskiyou County Community Services Council and the Siskiyou County Substance Abuse Coalition. Its goal was to bring teenagers, their perspectives, ideas and influence into the county s effort to reduce drug and alcohol abuse by teaching them leadership skills and helping them to network with each other to better utilize their resources. The training sessions were led by Youth Leadership Institute Senior Program Consultant Amanda Cue.Throughout the course of the training, eighth- through twelfth-grade students from Happy Camp, Yreka, Etna, Grenada, Montague, Tulelake, Mount Shasta, Weed and Medford, Ore. learned how to form effective partnerships, organize events,

She said she was excited about the things she had learned at the training and the opportunities it presented to pool resources with other youth leaders like Cassidy and the organizations they represent.Lauri Hunner with the Siskiyou County Community Services Council told the students that her group is pursuing four main priorities in their efforts to reduce teen drug and alcohol abuse. Those four priorities, she explained, are the abuse of prescription drugs, marijuana, alcohol and tobacco. She said the program is part of her organization s county-wide action plan to reduce and prevent drug and alcohol abuse as part of the effort to address the root causes of family and community dysfunction. The groups sponsoring the Youth Leadership Summit will be holding another youth training in February focussing on social norms as they relate to drug and alcohol abuse.
