It's that time of year for the wonderful barbecue that everyone knows will benefit the Arkansas Children's Hospital. The event has been going on for 26 years and it's known as the Blevins Community Area-Wide Benefit Barbecue for the Arkansas Children's Hospital. The event is scheduled for May 4, at the Blevins High School cafeteria. Serving time begins at 4 p.m., with carry-outs available. Our benefit was started because of the number of children from this area who were patients in the Children's Hospital, Don Honea, one of the event spokesmen, said. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Hinton and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Bonds each had a granddaughter who had used the hospital and they wanted to do something to express their appreciation for the way the hospital not only treated the patients, but how they cared for the parents and families of the children who were in the hospital. They contacted several people in the community and we had the first benefit and raised $5,000, he said. The community all agreed that this was a good cause and decided to continue to have the event the first Saturday in May. We have,hoganrains, in the past 26 years, raised a total of $220,000 for the Arkansas Children's Hospital. We are one of the oldest contributors to the Arkansas Children's Hospital for an area of our size that the hospital has. This year's benefit will be in memory of Dale and Helen Bonds, Honea said. Ms. Helen passed away the night before the benefit last year at the age of 90,longchamp chaussures, and Mr. Dale has since passed away at the age of 93. They were both very active supporters of this even and we are honored to dedicate this year's benefit to their memories. A Razorback yard decoration has been donated by the Bonds' family and it will be given away at the event. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. The ornament was presented to Mr. Bonds on his 92nd birthday. A new Henry lever-action 22 rifle is also to be given away. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5, also. We have kept the price the same since we have started because this gives everyone the opportunity to come out and enjoy a good clean family gathering, Honea said. The reason we can keep it the same price is because all the area churches each donate money and the area businesses donate money to help fund this event. Everything that is raised that night goes directly to the Arkansas Children's Hospital because of the community support, he said. The area churches each take time to come and serve during the benefit and provide the desserts and drinks. The best part of all is that we don't stop our boundaries just in Blevins, Honea said. We reach out to all the communities in Hempstead, Howard,beats by dre, Nevada, Pike, and adjoining counties. We want everyone who has had a child, a grandchild, or a family member who has been in the Arkansas Children's Hospital to come and enjoy this event. If anyone were to get severely burned, then they would be at the Children's Hospital, because they are the burn unit for Arkansas, he said. Our motto is that if the money we raise that night can save just one child's life, then all the work that goes into this event is well worth the effort. We urge everyone to come out and enjoy this wonderful event and help the Children's Hospital, Honea said.
