Investigation into a May 8 fire which destroyed a vacant residence in the 700 block of North Laurel Street has developed into an arson probe,ghd, fire and police officials have confirmed.Hope Fire Chief Dale Glanton said the fire completely destroyed the residence at 710 N. Laurel St. and damaged commercial storage units adjacent to the residence owned by Robert Epps of Hope. The Hope Police Department is looking into it,Hogan Scarpe, Glanton said. The house that burned and did the damage to his storage buildings was a condemned house. It was definitely a set fire because there were no utilities turned on. Glanton said he was not certain of the ownership of the residence at the time of the fire. Somebody inherited it who was from out of town, and somebody else took ownership of it, he said.HPD Assistant Chief Kim Tomlin said this morning that the fire remains under investigation as a potential arson. There wasn't any reason for the house to have caught fire on its own, Tomlin said.She said demolition work was being done on the residence at the time of the fire.Epps,Chanel, the owner of the commercial storage units adjacent to the house, said several units were smoke damaged and some units were seriously damaged by flames.
