It is exciting to see the State Board of Education moving aggressively to find a new director for Wyoming s system of public schools. For too long we have said that it is unwise to put the state s education system into the hands of an elected politician. Now that lawmakers have created this new position, it will be good to have the schools guided by education expertise, not by whoever campaigns the best. But this hiring must not be motivated by old myths. It is time for fresh concepts, not the same old things. We are referring to comments made recently by State Board President Ron Micheli about the hiring process. If his ideas are followed, the new director will be the product of status quo Wyoming thinking.First Mr. Micheli said, We need to keep in mind that Wyoming is unique. Well, actually, we don t. In fact, it is this false concept that Wyoming is unique and different (perhaps even special?) that has become a major detriment to education reform in the state.Yes, we understand the small population and the large distances between communities. And, yes, the new director will need to work with all of that. But those are not sound reasons for allowing everyone to do their own thing. Indeed, this idea of uniqueness is a driving force behind local control. And that has created, among other things, an uneven quality of education across the state, lack of access for some students to rigorous coursework and consistently mediocre test scores. The new director of education must be focused on raising the education bar by creating a more unified system that prepares all of this state s young people for competition on a global stage. He or she must leverage the data produced by the state department to create real reform of the system, not simply gentle tweaks. To heck with unique. Give us excellent. Which brings us to the second flaw in Mr. Micheli s comments. He said it will be important for the new director to inspire buy-in from the educational community.Again, we beg to differ. Rather than finding a way to get along with the system, it should be the new director s job to shake it out of its lethargy. The educational community has become a roadblock to Wyoming s push for education excellence. The teachers union fears real accountability and fights it at every turn. Administrators seek to maintain their turf rather to work with the Legislature as it tries to reform the system. And school boards fight to keep the power to do things their way rather than to give it up for a more unified approach. From his comments, it sounds as if Mr. Micheli is looking for a go along to get along kind of an education director. We as well as concerned parents, taxpayers and business owners want more.We want a man or woman who understands the strands of reform and can weave them into the fabric of the state s education system. We want someone who will lead change. We want someone who will stand up for real excellence. Now that, Mr. Micheli, would be unique.
