That the trustees chose not to do so is just another example of their arrogant belief that they know what is best for everyone else.This is not what this newspaper and its media partners were seeking when we sued the board to release the names of the finalists. We had been hoping for an open hiring process, one that would allow Wyomingites to meet the candidates in person or at least through their media and better understand who was available.Instead, the board quit its legal fight last week when it became clear that the courts were not going to let it proceed in secret. Then it did the bare minimum of complying with a court order by releasing the finalists names late Friday afternoon (the better to limit the flow of information to the public).Finally, it was off to Denver several hours away from its stakeholders for a closed-door meeting and private interviews on Sunday.Now the entire state knows who the board has selected. But how that decision was made, why one of the others was not chosen and what the new president thinks about issues important to the campus and the public remain cloaked behind the trustees veil of secrecy.One of the main reasons for an open process is to get buy-in from stakeholders. Had the trustees chosen to exercise the spirit of the state s open access laws rather than just the letter, faculty, students and other interested observers now would have a better sense of what Mr. Sternberg is all about and how he will address key issues on campus.Two of those bigger concerns are a perceived loss of academic freedom at UW and the apparent undue influence of donors on university policy.
