James Watson-Krips, an educational consultant from the United States working in Beijing, said he plans his daily events in accordance with the US embassy's air quality Twitter feed.
News about nearly 100 workers of the China Railway Tunnel Group (CRTG) beating up villagers and smashing their homes on February 13 in Southwest China's Yunnan Province has made headlines over the past few days. It has caused not only a serious hit to the CRTG's image but also fueled public fury at already ill-favored State-owned enterprises (SOEs). The initial police investigation has shown that several villagers attempted to extort money from passing workers by pretending to be splashed with mud, which sparked a fight and incited the workers to take revenge. But this cannot excuse the railway company from the neglect it has shown in managing its workers. The CRTG management has to be aware that no matter how scattered its countless projects are and how complex its personnel chain is, any incident happening at any construction site is closely linked to its brand name. The negative public image of SOEs did not come from nowhere. A sense of privilege is often apparent among SOE employees, louboutin pas cher, though to varying degrees. In some smaller cities or less-developed areas,Burberry Outlet Online, large-scale SOEs often consider themselves as operating for the central government, treating the local governments and people as subordinates. This time appears to have been an isolated incident. However, the moment the attack was exposed by the mass media, all public attention focused on the name of the company,Chanel, which was already clouded by public outcries over the scandal-ridden Ministry of Railways. Recent reports about SOEs' extravagant spending and greedy hoarding of wealth due to their monopolies have only made things worse. Suspicion and a sense of envy from the public have made SOEs easy targets for venting of discontent and allegations of corruption. We hope that not only the China Railway Tunnel Group, but other SOEs as well, will rethink their public relations strategy and how their current negative portrayal came to be. These State giants should think about what they can do to change the situation, instead of complaining about the "irrationality" of public criticism.SOEs are pillars of the national economy. Their influence is everywhere. But on the other hand,http://www.p90xdvdrose.com/, they maintain a distance from the public and are not entirely involved in market competition. Their management is more like that of government officials, seeking to stay away from the media and public.SOEs are no longer safe from public scrutiny. They have to step out and interact with the public. An improved image for SOEs will ensure sustainable development of these companies as well as of the national economy.
Analysts said Tuesday that Apple's apology for its after-sales policy suggests it "cannot afford to lose the China market," but noted the "double standards" taken by multinationals are a result of the country's lack of related standards and lax supervision. The apology in a signed letter by Apple's CEO Tim Cook said the company has rectified its much criticized after-sales policies in China, more than two weeks after China Central Television (CCTV) on March 15 accused the American electronics giant of providing second-rate after-sales services in the country.Sun Peilin, a senior IT industry researcher from the Beijing-based consulting company Analysys International, told the Global Times that Cook values the China market and regards it as an important driver of the company's future growth.Liu Baocheng, director of the Center for International Business Ethics at the University of International Business and Economics, told the Global Times that the apology came against the backdrop of fierce competition with Samsung and indigenous brands in the market. "It cannot afford to lose the market or tarnish its reputation," Liu said.According to CNN, Glen Yeung, an analyst from Citigroup, Monday compared the case to the experience of Hewlett-Packard in 2010,ghd, in which the company saw a 50-percent reduction in its share in China's personal computer market following an exposé on quality problems in its products. "If Apple were to lose as much as 50 percent of their China market share, this would equate to $13.1 billion in revenues and $3.62 in earnings per share," Yeung said.Liu noted that although Apple's "double standards" were "ethically deplorable," it was not legally liable for providing second-rate after-sales services to Chinese consumers. In fact, Apple is the latest in a series of multinationals that has been accused of such problems. In 1999, Japanese electronic manufacturer Toshiba was reported to have different policies for Chinese and American consumers."We should recognize that it is our own laws and regulations that have led to the double standards," said Liu.However, Liu noted that at this point it would be difficult for the government to introduce higher standards, given domestic enterprises' weak capacity.According to Apple's revamped after-sales policy on its website, Mac computers bought in East China's Zhejiang Province enjoy a three-year warranty, while the same products bought in other parts of the country only have a two-year warranty. The three-year warranty for personal computers is stipulated in the local regulations of Zhejiang.Liu also pointed out that China's judicial system lacks protective mechanisms for consumers. "China doesn't allow class action, and only those who are direct victims are allowed to lodge a lawsuit and the burden of proof lies on the consumer."
