Nepali way of lifeSome may argue that this phenomenon is due to the fact that Nepal is still an underdeveloped country. But I believe it comes from Nepali philosophy. Throughout its history, Nepal has had to contend with a powerful neighbor: India. In modern times, the country is caught between two giants: China and, still, India. Whether consciously or unconsciously, Nepalis have adopted a laid-back attitude toward life. What's more, the two major religions in Nepal are Hinduism and Buddhism, both of which call for inner peace. In Kathmandu, most Buddhists go to two famous Buddhism temples: Swayambhunath and Boudhanath. Swayambhunath stands on the top of a hill in the west of Kathmandu, and it provides a spectacular view of the Kathmandu Valley. This temple is also commonly known as the "Monkey Temple," named for the large troop of monkeys that occupy the entire hill, constantly amusing visitors with their tricks. Once, as I was resting after making the long climb up the stairs toward the temple's stupa, I felt someone push me in the back. I turned around immediately, but found no one there. However, a handsome little monkey, who had obviously just sat down several meters away, was slyly looking at me, with my cookies in his hand.My friend Choeying Dorje Lama, who lives in the temple, told me that Swayambhunath was a major foothold for the sage guru Padmasambhava (whose name means lotus-born) in his quest to spread Buddhism in the area. Today, many of the monks at Swayambhunath are locals that hail Tibetan ancestry, while others grew up in China before coming there, mainly from the Tibet Autonomous Region, and Sichuan and Qinghai provinces,ghdwhairrose.co, where Tibetan Buddhism is popular. Because Durga is a bloodthirsty deity, people beheaded buffaloes and goats and sprinkled blood as an offering to the goddess. When I told my monk friend that I had witnessed the bloodshed in the square that morning, he shook his head and said, "How crude these people are鈥o massacre creatures in celebration!"I did not make any response, as I am neither anti-Hindu nor anti-Buddhist. I am open to and tolerant of any culture or custom. So, with this open attitude, I visited Pashupatinath on the holy Bagmati River. Pashupatinath is Nepal's most important Hindu temple, and it is the site of many cremations. Along the Bagmati,hoganrains.com, the stone ghats,Chanel bags, or steps, to the water right in front of the temple used to be reserved for the cremation of royalty. Today, this area is for cremations of wealthy people. Set apart by a bridge, another set of ghats are for common people. Every day, cremations take place along this river. The ceremonies are open to anyone, and even photography is permitted, but on condition of discretion.Family members of the dead build a pyre, and the shrouded body is laid on top. After the loved ones say their tearful final goodbyes to the dead, the fire is lit. Ash and smoke are whisked up by the wind into the sky above, and the body burns until nothing but smoldering ash remains on the ghats. Finally, the ashes are swept into the river.According to custom, the bodies of the deceased are not kept overnight, thus cremations take place as soon as possible. To many Chinese, the idea of rushing to burn the body of a loved one is practically unfathomable, but in Nepal, the sooner the ashes of the body are swept into the holy river, the sooner the dead person's soul goes to heaven.It's true of any trip, but learning about the cultural differences and customs was perhaps the most rewarding aspect of my visit to this unique and spiritual society.
