It was cold(er), looked like it might rain and I thought I might get some photos of them in a different light �?literally and figuratively.The rain didn’t come,chanelmaindesign, and the bluebirds really didn’t either.As I sipped coffee with my right hand and held my photo blind in place against the wind with my left hand and foot (I refuse to stake out a blind in my backyard, it just seems like overkill) I considered the lack of activity.In cold weather I thought they would need to feed more often to keep up their energy needs so it would be a busy morning at the box.Three things made me realize my cold weather theory was baloney.First, they obviously weren’t feeding more often.Second,tory burch sale, the female was inside the nest box for 43 of the 60 minutes I was out there. That’s probably a real good way to keep everyone warm.Third, I remembered they only have two chicks in the box this year instead of the four and five they had in past years. Fewer mouths; less food required.The male gathered insects in an interesting way after the rainstorm so that was a highlight of the morning.He perched on one of his favorite hunting lookouts as usual but several times he dropped to the surface of the little slough behind our house and hovered just over the surface. The slough has been dry for a long time so the water’s surface was coated with floating vegetation and, apparently, insects caught in the flood.As he hovered over the mucky surface he reached down with his bill to pick up tender morsels.I’ve never seen them hover and pick like that. Usually their insect catching is a drop-stop-and-peck affair. It’s quick hit but still they usually land or at least touch-off.I assume his efforts are paying off with growing chicks inside the box. Normally I would share a picture of the chicks�?progress but I’ll do them a favor and keep the door closed until things warm up a little the next day or two.
