Blue skies this morning didn鈥檛 bring out the bluebirds any more than gray ones yesterday.Bluebirds like to stay warm as anyone else.Today I sipped my coffee with a newspaper in front of me in the warmth of my living room. I stayed in my "box" today.I was out with them Thursday morning. That鈥檚 probably a real good way to keep everyone warm.Third, I remembered they only have two chicks in the box this year instead of the four and five they had in past years. Fewer mouths; less food required.The male gathered insects in an interesting way after the rainstorm so that was a highlight of the morning.He perched on one of his favorite hunting lookouts as usual but several times he dropped to the surface of the little slough behind our house and hovered just over the surface. The slough has been dry for a long time so the water鈥檚 surface was coated with floating vegetation and, apparently, insects caught in the flood.As he hovered over the mucky surface he reached down with his bill to pick up tender morsels.I鈥檝e never seen them hover and pick like that. Usually their insect catching is a drop-stop-and-peck affair. It鈥檚 quick hit but still they usually land or at least touch-off.I assume his efforts are paying off with growing chicks inside the box. Normally I would share a picture of the chicks鈥?progress but I鈥檒l do them a favor and keep the door closed until things warm up a little the next day or two.
