Meet the Google Science Fair finalist who generates light from the palm of her hand Do you know you hold power in the palm of your hand? A Victoria teen has not only discovered that, she has demonstrated how the heat from a human hand can provide enough power to light up a flashlight. And her discovery has won Ann Makosinski a spot representing Canada in the 2013 Google Science Fair finals being held in California this September .
Makosinski, 15, will be at Google's Mountain View headquarters September 23 where she will present her hand-heat-powered flashlight to a panel of scientists in what is billed as the largest online science fair in the world.
Jordan 7 Citrus I became interested in the area of harvesting surplus energy
Jordan 6 Infrared when I realized that humans are a great source of untapped thermal energy and my objective became to make a flashlight that runs solely on the heat of the human hand, Makosinski, who is a student at St. Michael's University School, said in this video describing her project, dubbed The Hollow Flashlight.'
Jordan 9 Cool Grey Her video has received more than 1.2 million views. Makosinski used four Peltier tiles C which convert a temperature difference to electricity C to utilize the difference between the temperature in the palm of the hand and the ambient air.
The result is a flashlight that lights up with no batteries or moving parts. My design is ergonomic, thermodynamically efficient, and only needs a five degree temperature difference to work and produce up to 5.4 mW at 5 foot candles of brightness, Makosinksi, whose first toy as a child was a box of transistors, says in her project description. Google's third annual Science Fair attracted thousands of entries from 13 to 18-year-olds from 120 countries and Makosinski was named among the top 15 finalists will be competing in September. The winner will receive a 10-day trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Expeditions and $50,000 in scholarship funding.
