Before describing the group of youngsters, a slight smile crept onto Tim Rogers face Thursday morning. Rogers, who is the head coach of the Westport 12U little league all-star team, has watched the kids grown up for the last three, and for some, four years. I think like the spectrum, we've probably got the goofy (kids) to kids who eat, drink and sleep baseball, Rogers said. But as a group they balance each other out. They get along with each other well. It's a talented and diverse roster who has started the summer red hot. As of Friday, they finished pool play with a 4-0 record headed into Monday's double elimination District 2 Little League Tournament. They will face Trumbull National at 7:30 p.m. at Unity Field in Trumbull.
Take that fast start and credit it to the long-term foundation and chemistry. I think the difference between a 10 year old and a 12 year old is tremendous, in terms of when they hit their growth sprout, Rogers
jordan 8 phoenix suns said, who has coached a majority of the roster since the 10Us. The one thing that amazes me is their baseball skills haven't dropped off. They've kept pace and really grown together. They've played a ton of games together, practices together, so they are obviously comfortable together. Beside the chemistry lies raw talent. An undefeated record has been highlighted by amazing pitching from Harry Azadian, who through this past Thursday went 11 and a third inning with allowing just one hit. Backing
phoenix suns 8s for sale him up has been Chad Knight. He's clearly been our ace pitcher, Rogers said. We've got so much depth;
Chris Drbal, Max Popken, and Matt Stone have hit a ton. It's hard to single out just one person. Westport picked up a big win against Fairfield American (3-0) this past week, which resulted in more confidence and helped the team advance to the district tournament. That basically carried us (pitching) those three wins because I had the perfect game, I had the no-hitter and we just
phoenix suns 8s played great defense against American, Azadian said. We improved a lot on defense. Last year we gave up a lot of runs. A team in their path though is Fairfield National. A year ago as U11s, Westport lost twice to National, including in the district title game.
That makes us want to win it all, Azadian said. We've played National before, they're a great team but we just want to win it very, very badly. What will help Westport heading into Monday's tournament is that chemistry and team first attitude. They really have embraced as young people team first, individual second, Rogers said. It's a good group. A lot of people feel getting out of the district is the hardest part. They have their eye on the prize.
