Fun with Ted and Divot
Divot on the shore of Naknek Lake resting her belly and body on the beach.
As I mentioned, Katmai is not like Disneyland, and Ted and Divot, the only two bears we saw, are real live grizzly bears, even though Ted resembles a stuffed Teddy bear.
One day we ventured

louis vuitton outlet store All was clear on the beach, meaning not a sleeping giant. This time of the year the bears are beefing up for their winter nap and often sleep on the beach. They dig a hole for their belly and plop down.
We saw fishermen downstream and walked down the beach for a better look. Of course it's a little disconcerting when you seen former belly holes, trampled grass and lots and lots of bear trails going through the forest. I had just mentioned to my husband that there probably was a bear hiding out in the trees when I saw her. "There's, there's a bear," I stammered. She was no less than 15 feet away in a shrubbed area.
My husband stopped, even though I said lets get out of here. He just kept staring into the bushes. I couldn't imagine why he was stuck. It turns out he was looking beyond the bear thinking it was deeper in the woods. When he finally saw her, all he saw was her huge head. He then started backing away and she started walking out of the bushes in our direction.
I have to interject that Katmai is know for its habituated bears. Short for bears that know humans and don't think they are a food source. They are not "food conditioned bears". This did little to rest my mind as the huge omnivore was approaching. We both calmly backed away. Fortunately, she was more interested in the large pool of salmon that were congregating at the mouth of the river and turned to take a swim and do some snorkeling.
My husband shooting a photo of Divot as she made her way from the bushes into water.
I admit my heart skipped a few beats (okay it stopped), but fortunately this bear was behaved, and I did what the rangers tell you to do in the mandatory orientation for all visitors to Brooks Camp. Once, my blood pressure dropped, I got out my camera and managed to get video, below, of Divot snorkeling at the confluence of Brook's River.
