Campbelltown Mayor Simon Brewer says investigation into Facebook page breaches his human rights
His comments came as councillors final week voted to adopt a new social media policy soon after upholding a recommendation from a Local Government Panel probe into Mr Brewer's on the internet comments.
"The selection of the council and the acquiring of the investigation (are) an abomination against free
http://www.curapipe.com/Jordan.asp speech, democracy and a breach of my human rights," Mr Brewer said in an emailed statement.
"I will be putting a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission forthwith and I will not cease till this slur against my name is removed from the records."
The new policy prevents elected members and staff from commenting on the internet on confidential, private or legal matters relating to the council.
It also will regulate personal social media accounts to assure "adverse comments" are not published online.
"I will not be silenced by people who consider their decisions must not be questioned," Mr Brewer said.
"I am accountable to the men and women of Campbelltown and I will continue to express my opinion on any matters publicly and with no hesitation as I see fit."
Documents tabled at the meeting revealed the concern
http://www.mustafasultan.com/Jordan.asp erupted in August when Mr Brewer was critical of the council buying
Jordan 4 Toro Bravo land at Julia Drive, Rostrevor.
"Regardless of obtaining absolutely nothing in strategic plans or annual small business plans and not consulting the community, (the) council went into self-assurance and decided to obtain a home for a sizeable quantity of money," he wrote on Facebook.
"No wonder folks consider councils are suspect."
Primarily based on the comments,
Jordan 4 Fire Red Toro, Cr Marijka Ryan created a code of conduct complaint against Mr Brewer to acting chief executive Michelle Hammond, who referred the matter to the LGA.
In a letter dated November 1, the LGA stated Cr Ryan claimed Mr Brewer's comments had damaged the council's "brand".
Her complaints were upheld by the LGA, which advisable the breach be brought to the focus of Mr Brewer.
It advised no further penalties.
"(Mr) Brewer's criticism of the decision of the council in the media . was a breach of the code of conduct," the letter stated.
Speaking just after the meeting, Cr Ryan said it was "crucial" the suggestions created by the LGA had been upheld.
"A major element of (Mr Brewer's) role as mayor is to uphold the decisions of (the) council," she stated.
"He has a right to an opinion just before the council deliberates, but once a decision is produced by (the) council it is his mandate to assistance it - it is his function as principal spokesperson of the council.
"I am not trying to gag him - or shut down his social (media) page - I am a strong believer in democracy.
"But he must
http://www.justtheplacenebraska.com/Jordan.asp toe the line and conduct himself by the code."
Council CEO Paul Di Iulio declined to comment on the matter.
The problem comes two weeks following it was revealed the State Ombudsman upheld a complaint from Mr Brewer against the council discussing a separate code of conduct matter, which he lodged against a fellow councillor, in secret.

Deputy Mayor Chad Buchanan, Salisbury Council Posted at 1:01 PM November 28, 2012
Fantastic work Mr Mayor for standing up for absolutely free speech and informing ratepayers on decissions!! Shock horror you do your job!! It just shows why we have to have a common code of conduct for all councils accross the state and to get rid of the LGA from procedure as it is an high-priced JOKE!!!. To believe an elected member can be in breach of a code of conduct for commenting on Facebook tends to make me laugh till you stop and think that this is what takes place in areas like China and Iran! Be fascinating to see if i get breached for commenting given that i am also a Deputy Mayor of Salibury Council. Note* these are my comments, not Councils! I dont know your Mayor but from reading this article - he spoke against a decission of council? If you want to be technical the only issue he could be breached is for "not representing the views of council" as the principle spokes person. That would be pathetic even though. It's up to the ratepayers to hold us to account, not a panel run by LGA hand picked members from State Executive that charges ratepayers lots of $$$$.

Simon Brewer is a Mayor with a conscience and the guts to say what he seriously believes in. His use of Facebook as a communication tool to voice his opinion publically is quite within his democratic rights of cost-free
http://www.plcellc.com/Jordan.asp speech. Fantastic on him for standing up to these autocratic councillors. His criticism of the council TMs excessive spending is justifiable and he should be congratulated also for his disapproval of secret council meetings and confidential decisions, unlike the previous Burnside council which was hell bent on keeping every little thing secret. Oh, yes the secrecy rules dogma also extends to the State Government with its failure to total the MacPherson Report which seems
Jordan 4 Toro to be a easy decision for the Burnside Council, LGA and this Labor State Govt. Campbelltown residents would prefer
Jordan 4 Toro Bravo to see much less secrecy and much more open and transparent governance at all levels of government, starting with their own council would be a excellent move.
