Rolling blackouts in Edmonton, Lethbridge as Alberta expected to set electricty demand summer record Alberta's heat wave has boosted electricity demand bugs bunny 8s for sale to squadron blue 13s for sale a summer record of more than 10,000 megawatts and sparked a level 3 energy emergency alert that prompted rolling blackouts in Edmonton and Lethbridge. Residents are being asked to conserve electricity to prevent the system from being over-taxed and efforts are being made to avoid having to shut down more sections of the grid, said a spokesman for the Alberta Electric System Operator.
If it becomes necessary to shed more electricity load in regions of the province to reduce demand, Calgary and other areas of southern Alberta affected by the June floods will be spared, the spokesman said. Alberta last experienced rolling or rotating blackouts last July 9 when the electricity demand hit 9,885 megawatts, but the situation was exacerbated by the shutdowns of six electrical generators. John Esaiw, an AESO forecaster, said earlier today the system is expected to handle the load without blackouts, but that changed shortly after 4 p.m. While the peak today set the summer record, the all-time demand record of 10,609 MW was set in January 2012, Esaiw said.
The electricity system has a 14,000 MW supply, but that's assuming all generators are running at full capacity, he added. Several generators are off-line for planned playoffs 12s for sale and unplanned maintenance, and the province's supply is being augmented with electricity imports from B.C. and Saskatchewan, Esaiw said. Residents are being asked to turn off unnecessary lights phoenix suns 8s for sale and electrical appliances, minimize use of air conditioning and hold off running major appliances like dishwashers, grape 5s for sale washers and dryers until after 7 p.m.
