Good news about Pakistan is rare, and all the more precious for that. The country, often considered the "most dangerous place on earth," seems a boiler of violence, terrorism and religious extremism. But recently, it touched a major democratic landmark. The national general elections were held in Pakistan. It was the first time since its country's founding in 1947 that voters got to replace an elected democratic civilian government with another one. Pakistan is a stiff challenge for any prospective prime minister, whose country is full of internal and external problems like a stagnant economy, desperate poverty, rampant illiteracy, pervasive corruption, energy crisis, terrorism,

oakley outlet, which has been wracked for years by civil war, and India, with whom it has fought multiple wars. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has got huge mandate in current elections, and its leader Nawaz Sharif will become prime minister of Pakistan for the third time after serving from 1990 to 1993 and again from 1997 to 1999. His second term in the prime minister office was cut short by a coup led by General Pervez Musharraf, and he spent many years in exile in Saudi Arabia before returning to Pakistan in 2007. Currently, the roles are inverted. Sharif is headed back to power, while Musharraf is under house arrest and facing multiple cases.During the election campaign Sharif used anti-US oratory. He has promised to rein in US influence in Pakistan and review relations with it. Relations with the US, never easy, are bound to stay frustrating and tense. Sharif has been critical of the US "war on terror," including the drone strikes. US drone strikes in Pakistan along the border with Afghanistan remain highly controversial and are deeply unpopular in Pakistan. They have been publicly condemned at the highest official level. Unlike opposition leader Imran Khan, Sharif did not scream blue murder. He did not declare shooting drones down the day he becomes the prime minister. Nor did he pick quarrels with neighbors like Afghanistan and India to score cheap shots. During his last two tenures, Sharif did have a cordial relationship with the first Bush administration and with the Clinton administration. Like most Pakistani politicians, Sharif will do double-dealing, telling Washington one thing while telling his followers another. There are positive implications for the US of the Sharif-led government and its primary interest in Pakistan. The PML-N has strong parliamentary representation,

coach factory outlet, and remove some burden of dependability from the US as it makes plans to reduce its own aid to Pakistan. Sharif is a businessman who always supports free trade. This vision will promote regional cooperation and collaboration which will ultimately be helpful for the US role in South Asia as it prepares its safe departure from Afghanistan.Certainly it will be a challenge to Sharif's civilian government to maintain rule over the military, which has been the beneficiary of billions in US military hardware and will not take kindly to any modifications in relations with the US that could put in danger that understanding. Many observers are watching closely to see how Sharif deals with the military in his first months of his prime minister.A policy shift on the part of the US toward Sharif could also give a positive push to the overall relationship between two countries and the Afghanistan-Pakistan relationship, which can help to stabilize the Afghan situation. The elections in Pakistan pose historic challenges for the Sharif-led government and the Obama administration. The big question is whether Sharif will deal with the issues prudently or not, and whether the US will want to be on the right side of history or remain rooted to past reflexes.
