That the building s redevelopment will provide a boost to efforts at reviving downtown is an added bonus.But none of that justifies throwing away public money. Yes, 2.2 million was set aside in the project s budget to pay for the building and its adjoining property. But all of those funds do not have to be spent. Nor does it mean some savings justifies paying more than the appraised value.Take the argument from Councilman Jim Brown. He has put together an estimate of what it would cost to put up a new, similar building, and that works out to 2.63 million. Thus, he argues, paying 1.99 million for the Dinneen facility really saves the city 640,000.
